aVirtualCenterServertomanagemultiplehostsatthesametime.Managingmultiple
hoststhroughaVirtualCenterServerallowsyoutoexperimentwithadvanced
managementoptions,suchasresourcesharing,andalltheotheroptionsavailable
within
theVMwareInfrastructureenvironment.
TheVMwareInfrastructureManagementInstallerCD‐ROMisincludedintheVMware
packagingaccompanyingyourphysicalserver.UsetheCD‐ROMtoinstalla
VirtualCenterServeronthecomputerthatwillbeusedasamanagementstation.
Forproductionuse,VMwarerecommendsthattheVirtualCenterServer
beinstalledon
adedicatedserversystem.However,forthepurposeofthisexercise,itcanbeinstalled
onadesktoporlaptopandmanagedremotelythroughtheVI Client.VirtualCenter
ServermustbeinstalledonaWindowsmachinethathasnetworkaccesstothe
ESX Server 3ihost.
Before You Begin
TheVirtualCenterServerrequiresadatabase.VirtualCenterServerusesMicrosoftSQL
Server2005Expressforsmalldeploymentswithupto5hostsand50 virtualmachines.
Beforeyoubegin,makesureyoursystemmeetsthehardwareandsoftware
requirements.Forlargerdeployments,VMwaresupportsseveralOracleandMicrosoft
SQLServerdatabases.Forinformation

Hardware Requirements
TheVirtualCenterServerhardwaremustmeetthefollowingrequirements:
Processor–2.0GHzorhigherIntelorAMDx86processor.Processorrequirements
canbelargerifyourdatabaseisrunonthesamehardware.
Memory–2GBRAMminimum.RAMrequirementscanbelargerifyourdatabase
isrunonthesamehardware.
Diskstorage–560MBminimum,2GBrecommended.Youmusthave245MBfree
onthedestinationdriveforinstallationoftheprogram,andyoumusthave315MB
freeonthedrivecontainingyour%temp%directory.
