VMware Infrastructure Components
FamiliaritywiththecomponentsthatmakeupaVMwareInfrastructureenvironment
helpsyouunderstandthesetupprocessand,ultimately,theprocessofrunningvirtual
machinesusingVMwareVirtualCenter.VMwareInfrastructureincludesthefollowing
components:
TheVMwareInfrastructureClient–TheVI Clientistheinterfacetothe
VirtualCenterServerandhosts.Italsoprovidesconsoleaccesstovirtualmachines.
TheVMwareVirtualCenterServer–TheVirtualCenterServerunifiesresources
fromindividualhostssothatthoseresourcescanbesharedamongvirtual
machinesintheentiredatacenter.Itaccomplishesthisbymanagingthe
assignmentofvirtualmachinestothehostsandtheassignmentofresourcestothe
virtualmachineswithina
givenhostbasedonthepoliciessetbythesystem
administrator.
TheVirtualCenterServerallowstheuseofadvancedVMwareInfrastructure
featuressuchasVMwareDistributedResourceScheduler(DRS),VMwareHigh
Availability(HA),andVMwareVMotion.
Datacenter–Adatacenterisastructureunderwhichyouaddhostsandtheir
associatedvirtualmachinestotheVirtualCenterinventory.
Host–AhostisacomputerthatusestheESX Server 3ivirtualizationsoftwarerun
virtualmachines.HostsprovideCPUandmemoryresources,accesstostorage,
andnetworkconnectivityforvirtualmachinesthatresideonthem.Youmusthave
ahostbeforefollowingthestepsinthismanual.
VirtualMachine–Avirtualmachineisasoftwarecomputerthat,likeaphysical
computer,runsanoperatingsystemandapplications.Multiplevirtualmachines
canrunonthesamehostatthesametime.Virtualmachinesmanagedbythe
VirtualCenterServercanalsorunonaclusterofhosts.
