Defragment Virtual Disks
Likephysicaldiskdrives,virtualdiskscanbecomefragmented.Defragmentingdisks
rearrangesfiles,programs,andunusedspaceonthevirtualdisksothatprogramsrun
fasterandfilesopenmorequickly.
Beforeyoudefragmentavirtualdisk,makesureyouhaveadequatefreeworkingspace
onthehostcomputer.Ifyourvi
rtualdiskiscontainedinasinglefile,forexample,you
needfreespaceequaltothesizeofthevirtualdiskfile.Othervirtualdisk
configurationsrequirelessfreespace.
Makesurethevirtualdiskisnotmapped(onWindowsguests)ormounted(onLinux
guests).Youcannotdefragmentavi
rtualdiskwhileitismappedormounted.
Defragmentingdoesnotreclaimunusedspaceonavirtualdisk.Toreclaimunused
space,compactthedisk.See“CompactaVirtualDisk”onpage 240.
To defragment a virtual disk
1Runadiskdefragmentationutilityinsidetheguestoperatingsystem.
Forexample,inavirtualmachinewithaWindowsXPgues
toperatingsyste
m,use
theWindowsXPDiskDefragmentertoolfromwithinthevirtualmachine.
Defragmentingdiskscantakeconsiderable time.
2Ifthevirtualdiskis“growable”ratherthanpreallocated,defragmentitbyusing
theWorkstationdefragmentationtool:
a Selectthevirtualmachine.
bMakesurethevirtualmachineispoweredoff.
