forhostingWorkstation,seetheappropriateplatform‐specificinstallationtopic.
Install Workstation on a Windows Host
Beforeyoubegin,makesureyouhavetheitemslistedin“InstallationPrerequisites”on
page 39.Althoughyoucanentertheserialnumberafterinstallation,VMware
recommendsenteringitatinstallationtime.
ThistopicdescribeshowtouseaninstallationwizardtoinstallWorkstation.Toinstead
usethecommand‐lineinterfacetoperformasi
lentinstallationonmanycomputers,see

To install Workstation on a Windows host
1LogintoyourMicrosoftWindowshostastheAdministratoruserorasauserwho
isamemberoftheWindowsAdministratorsgroup.
Loginaslocaladministrator(thatis,donotlogintothedomain,un
lessyour
domainaccountisalsoalocaladministrator).
AlthoughanadministratormustinstallWorkstation,auserwithout
administrativeprivilegescanruntheprogramafteritisinstalled.
2FromtheStartmenu,chooseRunandspecifythepathtoeithertheCD/DVDdrive
orthedownloadedinstallerfile:
Ifyouareinstallingfromtheinstallationmedia,enterD:\setup.exe,where
D:isthedriveletterforyourCD/DVDdrive.
Ifyouareinstallingfromadownloadedfile,browsetothedirectorywhere
yousavedthedownloadedinstallerfile,andruntheinstaller.
ThefilenameissimilartoVMware-workstation-<xxxx-xxxx>.exe,where
<xxxx-xxxx>isaseriesofnumbersrepresentingtheversionandbuild
numbers.
OnWindowsVistaandWindows7,whentheUserAc
countControldialogbox
promptsyouforpermissiontoruntheinstaller,clickContinue.
IfyouhaveanearlierversionofWorkstationinstalledonyoursystem,theinstaller
removesthatversionbeforeinstallingthenewversion.Aftertheuninstallationis
complete,youmightbepromptedtorestartyourcomputerbeforetheinsta
llercan
installthenewversion.
