Prepare a Linux Host for Running in Kiosk Mode
OnLinuxhosts,ifyouplantousekioskmodetopreventusersfromaccessingthehost
operatingsystem,youmustsetsomeadditionalproperties.Ifyoudonotpreparethe
host,usersmightbeabletousekeyboardshortcutsorothermechanismstoaccessthe
hostwheninkioskmode.
Beforeyo
ubegin,createanACEinstancethatusesakioskmodepolicyandinstalliton
aLinuxhost.See“SettingKioskModePolicies”onpage 420and“InstallinganACE
PackageonaLinuxHost”onpage 469.
ThepreferredwindowmanagersforrunningACEinstancesinkioskmodeare
FVirtualWindowMa
nager(FVWM)andMetacity.
To prepare a Linux host for running in kiosk mode
1Useatexteditortoaddthefollowinglinestothehost’s~/.vmware/preferences
file:
pref.grabOnKeyPress = "TRUE"
pref.grabOnMouseClick = "TRUE"
2AddthefollowinglinestocreateaServerFlagssectioninthe
/etc/X11/xorg.conffile:

3RestarttheXsession.
4Manuallydisableallkeyboardshortcutsinhost’swindowmanager.
5IftheDeskbarappletprogramisusedinthepanelonthehost,removeitby
right‐clickingitandselectingRemovefromPanel.
Ifyoudonotremovethisapplet,ausercanpressthekeyboardcombinationfor
exitingki
oskmodeandthenpressAlt+F3toaccessthehostfilesystem.
6Topreventthehost’sfilebrowserfromopeningwhenaremovabledeviceis
connectedtothehost,disabletheapplicableoptionsinthehost’ssystem
preferencesandfilebrowserpreferences.
Forexample,openafilebrowseronthehostandsel
ectEdit>
Preferences>Media
anddeselecttheBrowsemediawheninsertedcheckbox.Also,fromthehost’s
Systemmenu,selectPreferences>RemovableDevices,orsimilarlynamedtabs,
anddeselectthecheckboxes.
