Upgrade a Guest Operating System
WhenyouusetheNewVirtualMachinewizardtocreateavirtualmachine,oneofthe
settingsyouspecifyistheguestoperatingsystemtypeandversion.Workstation
choosesconfigurationdefaultsbasedontheguesttypeandversionyouchoose.
Ifyouupgradeaguestoperatingsystemtoanewerversion,alsoupd
atethegues

operatingsystemversionforthevirtualmachine.
To upgrade a guest operating system
1StartWorkstationandselectthevirtualmachine.
2Makesurethevirtualmachineispoweredoff.
3 ChooseVM>Settings.
4ClicktheOptionstab.
5OntheGeneralsettingspanel,intheVer s i o n field,selecttheversiontowhichyou
plantoupgradeandcl
ickOK.
Thesettingyouspecifyhereiswrittentothevirtualmachine’sconfigurationfile.
Thissettingdoesnotactuallychangetheguestoperatingsystemitself.
6Poweronthevirtualmachine.
7Toupgradetheguestoperatingsystem,followtheupgradeinstructionsprovided
bytheoperatingsystemvendor .
Change the Version of a Virtual Machine
IfyoucreatedvirtualmachineswithanearlierversionofWorkstation,youmust
upgradetothelatestversiontousethenewestfeatures.Forinformationaboutnew
features,seethereleasenotes.
IfyoucreatedWorkstation6.5or7.0virtualmachinesandyouwanttodeploythose
virtualmachinestorunonadifferentVMw
areproduct,youmightneedtodowngrade
toaversionthatiscompatiblewiththatproduct.
UsingWorkstation7.0,youcandowngradetoversions4,5.x,6,or6.5.
Youcanalsodeterminewhichvirtualhardwareversiontouse.
